My Not So Perfect Life - Sophie Kinsella

Katie Brenner has the perfect life: a flat in London, a glamorous job, and a super-cool Instagram feed. OK, so the truth is that she rents a tiny room with no space for a wardrobe, has a hideous commute to a lowly admin job, and the life she shares on Instagram isn’t really hers.

But one day her dreams are bound to come true, aren’t they?
Until her not-so-perfect life comes crashing down when her mega-successful boss Demeter gives her the sack. All Katie’s hopes are shattered. She has to move home to Somerset, where she helps her dad with his new glamping business.
Then Demeter and her family book in for a holiday, and Katie sees her chance. But should she get revenge on the woman who ruined her dreams - or try to get her job back? Does Demeter – the woman who has everything – actually have such an idyllic life herself? Maybe they have more in common than it seems.
And what’s wrong with not-so-perfect, anyway?

Now i love a chick-lit like the rest of the general public; the relatable characters, good looking guy, easy plot, kick-ass careers and of course, the cheesy finale which we all know is coming but still celebrate. But. This  just didn’t work for me this time.

the characters were so generic and been written countless times before: the high-flying boss with an attitude, bitchy office girls, girl clique against the ‘normal’ main character and of course, the hot guy.

Now usually the above all work well but this just felt standard and left me bored at turning the next page.

The one thing i will hold my hands up to is that it really explored the use of social media to embellish our ordinary lives and fake it; a topic which probably nearly all of this book’s audience can relate to. A lesson in not believing everything you see online…

Afraid i just wouldn’t recommend this, even for a beach read.

Hippie - Paulo Coelho

To learn about yourself, explore the world around you. Drawing on the rich experience of his own life, bestselling author Paulo Coelho takes us back in time to relive the dreams of a generation that longed for peace and dared to challenge the established social order.  In HIPPIE, he tells the story of Paulo, a skinny Brazilian with a goatee and long hair, setting off on a journey in search of a deeper meaning for his life. He travels on the famous `Death Train to Bolivia', then on to Peru, later hitchhiking through Chile and Argentina. In the famous Dam Square in Amsterdam he finds young people playing music, while discussing sexual liberation, the expansion of consciousness and the search for an inner truth. There he meets Karla, a Dutch woman in her twenties who has been waiting to find the ideal companion to accompany her on the fabled hippie trail to Nepal.  Together with their fellow travellers, they embark on a trip aboard the Magic Bus, heading across Europe and Cen...

#Girlboss - Sophia Amoruso

A #Girlboss is in charge of her own life. She gets what she wants because she works for it. The first thing Sophia Amoruso sold online wasn't fashion - it was a stolen book.  She spent her teens hitchhiking, committing petty theft, and dumpster diving. By twenty-two, she had resigned herself to employment, but was still broke, directionless, and working a mediocre day job she'd taken for the health insurance.  It was there that Sophia decided to start selling vintage clothes on eBay. Eight years later, she is the founder, CEO, and creative director of Nasty Gal, a $100 million plus online fashion retailer with more than 350 employees.  Sophia's never been a typical CEO, or a typical anything, and she's written #Girlboss for outsiders (and insiders) seeking a unique path to success, even when that path is winding as all hell and lined with naysayers. So good i read it twice. A year apart, but still. It was that great a read and resource i would recommend ...
